The bent wood Rapson Rapid Rocker was first built for the museum of Modern art in 1939 and it was first sold in 1948 by knoll associates as a part of their ‘Rapson Line’. These knoll rockers were a solid wood version executed under the wartime materials restrictions. Knoll subsequently sold the line to Bloomingdale's in 1945, who then took out a full page advertisement for the rocker in the New York Times, holding it up as an example of an innovative and attractive modern take on a traditional piece.
The wood is maple and the finish is two coats of a spray applied clear (50 sheen) catalyzed lacquer. The size of the chair is 26.25" wide side-to-side, 35" high, and 33.25" deep front-to-back. The chair weighs about 30 pounds. The upholstery fabric is Douglas Industry’s Woolen Images Sherpa and Shire line. The Sherpa and Shire fabrics are made of Marquesa Lana which is a polyolefin. We picked the fabric because it looks like a wool and is exceptionally tough and stain resistant. Allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.
